The Scenes
Most of the scenes’ flowed well and the most of the actors had good chemistry and sounded natural to me, I’m unsure which year the students were in for this show I think it’s usually a mix of first and later year students.
There were a few stand-outs, Gabe in particular made me think of Eric Idle crossed with James Acaster. (I’ll update with the other actor’s name when I find the programme).
Favourite scene was “Cat”, the one with the robbery and I loved the one-minute plays, definitely going to the Bytes show (60 one minute shows). The SLAM poetry was fun too. Lots of good monologs.
Ending the show with a dance was great, high energy and funny.
Previous Scene+ shows at the old theatre set the scenes them on raised platforms, I feel that would benefit in the new space too, I was right at the back of the room
The Food
Scene+ previously was short scenes several minutes long ,divided by several courses of food prepared and served by the Hagley Hospitality students (i think). Later shows reduced the complexity to platters for each table, plenty of alcohol and soft drinks are also available.
The Social platter company now serves (imo) generously portioned platters of cheese, fruit, bread and crackers.
I suspect my experience was a “last show of the season” issue, as the bread and pretzels were soggy, likely being stored in the same container overnight as the fruits and cheese, which as a food whore/critic disappointed me a tad, however offset with the low price of the show, talent and generous cheese portions lessens the that disappointment a lot.
Easy to fix, but more admin. #yolo (I ate it all and enviously eye’d the cheese the guy next to me didn’t finish).
The Space
This is my first look at their new blackbox theatre since.. must have been Scene+ 2021? Wow. Good to be back, Hagley Theatre always slays!
It feels like a good size for a theatre, intimate and not too warm. A bit squished with so many tables and chairs.
The stage is setup with partitions to the side allowing for a real theatre feel for scene changes.
Thanks Cam!
A most humble thank you to Cam for the last minute ticket to the sold out show. 😅
